Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Why DEI is important:

“Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations” - Vulcan Philosophy

There’s been a lot of talk in the news about DEI programs lately, and we wanted to let you know that Cleveland ConCoction is a DEI-heavy organization. We have Dragons, Elves, and Ichthyocentaurs; Death-Rays, Empaths, and Ion-Drives; and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as well. As a fan-run Sci-FI/Fantasy con, we love to explore a whole multiverse of possibilities, and we want to make sure all of our ConContioneers are staying safe while doing so.

As such, we want to be crystal clear that we stand against discrimination in all its many forms, including racism, sexism, normalism (body shaming) and other variations on fear and hate. We are dedicated to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for all of our fellow nerd culture; regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or expression. Together we hope to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community that celebrates our similarities and differences in a positive manner. Sci-Fi and Fantasy stories often show us worlds where we have overcome hate to build a better world, and they also show us worlds where hate and discrimination win out. It doesn’t go so well for those dystopian folks. At ConCoction, we choose to follow the path of positivity going forward. (We are also a certified 501(c)3 non-profit organization at both the State and Federal levels, so it’s literally illegal for us to discriminate.)

So come on out and join our human-horse-fish hybrids and all the other mix and match Sci-Fi/Fantasy ConCoctions at our Con. This year we’re mashing up the 40th anniversary of both “Back to the Future” and “Super Mario Brothers” as we “Race Back to the Castle!” to save our beloved .. well.. Whatever really. Great Scott! See you in March!

Cleveland ConCoction - Discord Server & MailChimp

Cleveland ConCoction Discord

In an effort to be in better contact with our extended ConCoction community, reach out to new and current volunteers, as well as communicate with other fandom and convention groups, we have created a Cleveland ConCoction Discord server.

This will be open to all of the membership, and not just during convention hours, but year-round.

Discord Server link:  https://discord.gg/RDm9N8qF

MailChimp Email Service

MailChimp has updated their plans and rules of service and has made that a less viable option for our group cost wise.

We are currently exploring other options, but may have to go back to standard email list mailings or a list serve option.  Once we have more information here, we will inform the Membership.

2/16/2023

Cleveland ConCoction, being an All-Volunteer run and lead organization is now opening it's election cycle for the 2023-2024 year cycle.

Every year 2 positions are voted on for those that would comprise the governing body of the organization.

Those interested do not need to currently hold a leadership position within the Organization, meaning that in a Convention Year you do not need to be a Department Lead or Second in order to submit yourself for consideration. Preference may be given to those with past experience working as a volunteer and/or member with ConCoction in good standing, or another related Convention group or Volunteer Association.

What is helpful is to have a general working knowledge in areas such as: effective communication, business skills, operational management, non-profits, volunteer organization.

Meetings are held quarterly (Hybrid), and communication is through direct email and Discord.

If you have interest in one of these open positions, send your email of interest with your contact information and the skills you'd like to share to: [email protected]

Letters of interest accepted until April 15th, 2023

Voting will conclude by May 15th, 2023

Newly elected Board members will begin by attending the 2Q 2023 Board Meeting in May/June 2023

Being a 501(c)(3) organization every little bit counts towards our group giving back to our community and the charities we support.

Through Amazon Smile in 2018 we raised just over $32 in donations through purchases people made every day. These funds will go back into making these events work better for our members and volunteers, as well as our visiting guests and the charities we support.

If you would like to donate to us in 2019, just go to smile.amazon.com and lookup Cleveland ConCoction to start donating to us today.

Don't want to shop Amazon, but want to donate directly to ConCoction?  There are several ways to do so!
  • There is a PayPal link at the bottom of the main page of our website
  • We do accept most donations in the form of goods, such as unopened food donations to our ConSuite or other tangible items that can be used at our events
  • Donations can be accepted in the Registration Dept. during ConCoction 2019
  • Volunteer help is always welcome and appreciated!

Every bit goes a long way.
Thank you for your continued support!

How to help your local convention...

We often get asked "How can I help ConCoction?"

ConCoction is an all fan-run, volunteer run convention here in NE Ohio, which is as we like to say "By the Fans, For the Fans" and has been since its formation in November of 2012.
The best ways you can help your local convention are simple but may require some time if you're interested.
  • Volunteer : Not just just during the convention, but before and after, at other fundraising events like our Game Days, or become part of the convention volunteer staff and be a year round volunteer.

  • Pre-Register : One of the ways we can do more every year is by having pre-registration memberships rather than at the door memberships. By registering for the convention, you are a member of the convention. You are welcome to vote in Board Elections in addition to attending our monthly meetings. By being a member of ConCoction this is your convention.

  • Tell A Friend : The best way for ConCoction to continue to grow is by word of mouth. Tell your friends and family about us and if you had a good time. If you didn't, please tell us!

  • Sponsorship : Do you or does someone you know have a business that might be a good fit for a sponsorship? Do you know of a charity we should look at assisting?
Being a 501(c)(3) organization and all volunteer driven, we are always looking for sponsorships that can best benefit our members and our events, as well as charitable organizations we can assist towards our goals of benefitting the arts, education, STEM, and awareness in NE Ohio.

There are many ways to help your local convention community grow and thrive, and we thank you for 5+ fantastic years here in NE Ohio!

What are we not?

People often ask us “What kind of convention is ConCoction?” We are not a large, commercial, for-profit convention - These cons are run by large companies, travel the country, and come to our area once or twice a year (if you include Columbus). I feel they’re like the circus.. they’ll come to town and give you a big show, with lots of guests and vendors, some cosplay, gaming and panels, but ultimately they pack up and leave town.
Admission prices are similar to ours to start, but the add-ons for the “total experience” can get to be quite pricy. Cleveland isn’t a community for them, it’s a marketplace. A week after their event, they won’t be drinking at the nerdy bar, going to the midnight movie opening, or hitting a local comic shop on Wednesday. I respect the effort, but that’s not what ConCoction wants to be.

We are not a comic-con - We totally enjoy and support these small to mid-size local cons that are very focused on the comic fandom, but we aren’t one of them. The smaller versions tend to be one-day only, very cheap compared to us, and have a great selection of vendors and artist tables. There may or may not be a cosplay contest and some panels.
They’re totally focused on their community, and we support them for it. But ConCoction is designed to be more across-the-board, and appeal to all kinds of fandom, no matter the media involved.

So we’re not the Big Guys, and we’re not a one-day Con. What are we?
We’re the in-between ground. We’re a small, local, not-for-profit, volunteer-run fandom convention. We’re half-gaming, half-everything else. We’re the everything con, and we’re proud of that fact. Our goal is to be part of the local geeky/nerdy community all year long, and we support all the local geeky events we can. We will throw you a weekend full of fun, but we don’t pack up and leave town. We support our local charities, local vendors, local artists, local authors, and all the attendees who make ConCoction such a wonderful mashup of the weird and wonderful. We intentionally refuse to specialize into any one fandom.
Each year, we will mix it up, mash it up, and celebrate what comes out of it. We’re a ConCoction, and we’re proud of it. We hope to see you at ConCoction 2016, and at all the other geeky events before and after!
